Peaking
Peaking organizes the final 1-week or 2-week block of a mesocycle around maximum intensity expression with minimum residual fatigue. Volume cuts to roughly 20 to 30 percent of mesocycle average. Intensity climbs above 90 percent of one-rep max on the dominant lift. The peaking block converts the structural and neural gains of accumulation and intensification into a tested performance baseline.
How a peaking block works
The peaking block solves a sharpness problem. After three to six weeks of accumulation and intensification, the trainee carries enough residual fatigue that maximum strength expression sits below true capacity. Peaking removes the fatigue while preserving the trained adaptations. Volume drops sharply. Reps per set drop to 1 to 3. Frequency on the peaking lift may drop from three sessions per week to one.
Intensity stays high or climbs slightly. Singles at 90 to 95 percent of one-rep max preserve the neural rate-coding pattern needed to express force. The block ends with a test or competition. Strength climbs roughly 3 to 7 percent above the pre-peaking baseline in trained athletes. Early-intermediate trainees see less peaking effect because baseline fatigue is lower, so the supercompensation window is narrower.
How kettlebell programming applies peaking
Single-bell training caps peaking by the next bell jump. A trainee pressing the 24 kg single rep cannot peak at 22 kg because the bell does not exist. Kettlebell peaking becomes density-based: test day runs the same bell at higher rep targets or lower rest. The AMRAP benchmark on the last training day of a mesocycle acts as a peaking expression for density gains rather than absolute strength.
Block periodization integrates peaking as the realization phase of the accumulation-transmutation-realization tri-cycle. Intensification phases run two to three weeks ; peaking compresses to one or two weeks at the end.
