Kettlebell Dead Clean

The dead clean is a clean executed from a fully terminated bell on the floor, with zero swing-momentum carryover. The lifter resets stance and grip on each rep. The pull is purely concentric, with no eccentric pre-load from a backswing. Each rep starts from neutral and ends in the rack.

Mechanics and load path

The dead clean removes the stretch-reflex advantage. A regular clean borrows elastic energy from the hike-pass and backswing. The dead clean starts with the bell parked, hip-hinged setup at the handle, no rebound available. The hip drive and pull must originate from the ground without elastic help.

The deadstart amplifies the concentric pulling demand. Hamstrings, glutes, and lats produce force from cold each rep. Form integrity becomes harder to hold under fatigue because the cumulative neural cost is higher than a chained clean for the same load.

The reset between reps is non-negotiable. A dead clean that drifts into a partial backswing has degraded into a regular clean. The grip releases at the floor, the body resets to a hike-pass stance, the lats lock the shoulder back, and the next rep starts from full stop.

Programming

The dead clean is a load-test movement. Programmed for low reps from a full dead stop, it builds concentric pulling power without the elastic assistance a chained clean borrows from the backswing. It runs one-arm or two-handed; the one-arm version adds a unilateral side-rotation demand. As the closing segment of a chain finisher inside a complex round, the bell-to-floor reset between reps marks the transition into the inter-round rest.

The dead clean works as a load-calibration check on a grinder day, the bell weight read against the complex baseline. The grinder holds that load across the block and progresses through volume, so the dead clean confirms the weight is right rather than tracking a weekly climb.

The dead clean stands in the lexicon as a pulling-power reference and a load-calibration check, available to any block that wants concentric pull work without elastic carryover.
