Cossack Squat
The cossack squat is a lateral unilateral squat performed by shifting weight onto one bent leg while the opposite leg extends straight to the side along the floor. Holding a kettlebell goblet-style at the chest counter-balances the load and helps maintain upright torso through the bottom position. The Russian sport tradition uses it as a primary hip-mobility and unilateral-strength drill.
Mechanics and load path
The setup starts wider than shoulder-width. The athlete shifts weight laterally onto one leg, bending that knee deeply while the opposite leg extends straight to the side, foot turned up or anchored on the heel. The torso stays upright through hip and ankle mobility, not through trunk flexion. The goblet bell counter-balances the descent.
The depth target is the bent-leg hip touching the heel — full hip flexion on the loaded side, knee tracking the toe. The straight leg's hamstring and adductor groups receive a deep stretch under load. The exercise is one of the few that loads the adductors in a lengthened position.
The cossack squat exposes ankle dorsiflexion limits, hip mobility asymmetries, and adductor restrictions on intermediate athletes. Most novice attempts shift the heel of the bent-leg side off the floor, which signals an ankle restriction worth addressing separately.
Programming context
Goblet cossack squat fits naturally into a kettlebell programming block as a mobility-and-strength bridge — a station that exposes hip and ankle mobility under bell load without crossing into pure ballistic work. The pattern recruits unilateral lower-body strength while the goblet hold demands constant anterior brace, making the exercise serve both mobility-restoration and structural support roles.
Programs targeting frontal-plane mobility, unilateral lower-body strength, or hip-and-ankle restoration use the cossack squat as a primary station. The bell stays light (eight to fourteen kilograms intermediate) — the diagnostic value sits in the depth and the position quality, not in the load.
