Kettlebell Clean and Push Press

The clean-and-push-press is a chained sequence that links a clean directly into a push-press without resetting the bell at the rack between reps. The clean delivers the bell to the rack. The push press launches it overhead. The rack position is a transient junction, not a structural pause. Each rep consumes more total energy than a standalone press at the same load.

Mechanics and load path

The clean phase follows standard mechanics — hike-pass setup, hip drive, vertical pull, hand insertion to the rack. The bell arrives on the forearm with the lats engaged and ribs stacked. There is no decompression breath. The torso brace established for the clean carries directly into the push press dip.

The dip-drive of the push press starts within a half-second of the clean catch. Knee and hip flexion absorb-and-launch in one continuous motion. The bell is locked overhead before the cardiovascular cost of the clean fully registers in the nervous system.

The chained pattern doubles the metabolic cost per rep relative to a press in isolation. The clean produces glycolytic load. The push press adds neural and structural load on top before the cleanup ATP turnover from the clean has resolved. Sets feel disproportionately harder than the math suggests.

In the Kettlebell Complex protocol

Clean and push press appears in three Conditioning Flow sessions — S2, S8, S14 — as the second station of the flow, after the one-arm swing. Eight reps per side at the light tier (12 kg for an intermediate man), run for five rounds at W1 and six at W2 and W3, all inside the complex chain. Rest holds at sixty seconds through W1 and W2, cutting to forty-five on the W3 Peak.

The progression follows the density-training frame. Load stays constant. Rest cuts. Round count climbs. The clean-and-push-press is the chain's high-density anchor, balanced by snatch stations and one-arm swings in the same complex.
